How we built Villa Leaf for remote work

How we built Villa Leaf for remote work

When we started taking long-stay guests, we made one promise: nothing about the villa would stop them from working. No bad Wi-Fi, no broken chairs, no awkward desk lighting at 22:00 for a Tokyo call. Here's what we learned the hard way, and what we now have in place.

What we installed

  • 300 Mbps fibre, with a 4G backup. We ran a second line a year in, after one guest missed a board meeting because of a 90-second outage. The 4G router kicks in automatically. We've not had a full drop since.
  • Ergonomic chairs in every bedroom. The Pool Villa and the Master Suite each have a proper desk chair with lumbar support, not a dining chair pretending to be one.
  • Second monitors on request. For monthly stays we set up a 27-inch external monitor at the desk. It folds away if you're not using it.
  • Standing-desk add-on. A small portable riser, on request. We bought four after a guest told us about her back.
  • USB-C hubs, all the dongles. Every desk has a drawer with HDMI, USB-A, ethernet, and chargers for both Apple and Android. So you don't have to bring them.
  • Power on every wall. We added two extra power points to each bedroom, universal sockets, no adapter needed.

How Bali changed our team's hours

The biggest fix wasn't equipment, it was rhythm. Most of our long-stay guests work for companies headquartered in Europe, North America, or Australia. The Bali day, set up right, is almost a gift to all three.

A guest from Berlin gets a 14:00 to 22:00 working window that lines up with mid-morning Europe. He surfs at sunrise, has breakfast at 09:00, goes for a walk before his first call. A guest from Sydney is on at 10:00 Bali, off by 17:00, and at La Brisa by sunset. A guest from New York works late on Bali time, sleeps in, joins the team for lunch.

We didn't invent any of this. We just stopped getting in the way of it. Breakfast service is now flexible, Kadek serves between 07:30 and 11:00 instead of a fixed slot. Housekeeping is silent between 09:00 and 13:00 so guests aren't on calls with a vacuum next door. We even put a quiet-room sign on every bedroom door, because asking the driver to call back was costing too many people too many emails.

"I got more done in a month here than the previous quarter at home. The thing isn't the Wi-Fi, though the Wi-Fi is great, it's that nothing here was designed to interrupt me."

If you're considering it

Tell us your timezone before you book. We'll suggest the right bedroom (the Pool Villa has the quietest desk corner), set up the monitor before you arrive, and brief the team on your hours. None of this costs extra on a monthly stay, it's just how we do it now.
