A family villa, a frangipani tree, and one guest who didn't want to leave

Villa Leaf began as a private home in 2021. Five years later, it's still a private home, we just open the door for a few hundred guests a year.

How it started

From a quiet street in Canggu to four bedrooms full of strangers who became friends

The short version of how a small Balinese family built the villa, and why the name has nothing to do with marketing.

In 2021, a Balinese family from Tabanan bought a small plot at the end of a quiet street in Canggu. There was a frangipani tree at the front gate, the kind that drops white flowers into the path every morning. They built four bedrooms around it.

The first guest was a French couple who'd booked for five nights and stayed eleven. They left a note for Made, asked if they could come back, and recommended the villa to seven friends. We never put it on Airbnb. We never had to.

We called it Villa Leaf because of the tree, daun in Indonesian, but Leaf says the same thing in less syllables. The design is modern, but the rhythm is Balinese: slow mornings, long lunches, and the kind of silence that only happens when palm trees are doing their job.
