The best time to visit Bali (by month, by neighbourhood)

The best time to visit Bali (by month, by neighbourhood)

Bali has two seasons, wet and dry. That's the textbook answer, and it's also wrong. The honest answer is that every month has its case, and the right month for you depends less on weather and more on what you came here to do.

Here's the version we tell guests when they ask. Month by month, in the words of someone who's lived through ten of each.

The year, month by month

January

Wet season in full swing. Daily rain, but mostly short. Empty beaches, cheap rates, and the rice paddies are at their greenest.

February

Still wet, still quiet. Indoor mornings, sunny afternoons, and the kind of soft light photographers love.

March

The shoulder month. Showers ease, the surf picks up, and the villa starts to fill. A great month if you want quiet and good weather.

April

Dry season begins. Cool mornings, warm evenings, low crowds. One of our favourite months to host.

May

Peak shoulder. The weather is at its best, sunny, breezy, not yet hot. Book a month ahead.

June

Dry, breezy, busy. The high-season starts mid-month. Restaurants need reservations, beach clubs need bookings.

July

Peak season. Hot, dry, every café full at 09:00. We close out a month ahead, book early or wait until September.

August

Same as July, plus Australian school holidays. Beautiful weather, busy island. Long stays are still calmer.

September

The locals' favourite. Crowds thin out, the weather stays dry, the surf is still excellent. Best balance of the year.

October

Quiet, warm, occasional shower. Late October sees the first storms. Great rates, great mood.

November

Wet season returns. Short tropical downpours, mostly in the afternoon. Mornings stay sunny. Bargain rates.

December

Christmas and New Year are full. Mid-December is genuinely quiet, the sweet spot. The two end weeks of the year are the highest demand of the year.

The short version

If you have to pick one month, pick September. The weather is dry, the crowd is gone, the surf is still working, and the rice paddies haven't been cut yet. We tell most guests this and most of them book before we finish the sentence.

"Come in September. If you can't, come in late April. If neither works, the second half of December is quieter than people think."

Quick best-of list

  • Best overall: September, quiet and dry.
  • Best budget: February, empty villa rates, half-day rain.
  • Best surf: May to September on the west coast.
  • Best for families: April or October, warm, short rains, fewer crowds.
  • Avoid: Last two weeks of December if you want quiet.

When you book with Villa Leaf, we'll tell you honestly if your dates collide with anything tricky, a local ceremony, a school holiday, a surf comp at Batu Bolong. We'd rather you reschedule than show up to a busier Bali than you bargained for.
